    Food preservation- shtf

Two days ago or three, one chest freezer shit the bed, caught it the night before last.

Transfered all the expensive stuff to the others, put out the remainer for the local critters.

Had 10 2-1/2 pound jars of Wally and Skippy peanut butter in the bottom of the freezer.

Looked online at AI thoughts on the condition and edible factor.

AI said the oil and stuff would have seperated from freezing, loosing its homoginization, but was still OK to eat, bio wise,

    although questionable tase wise.

Well, I opened one jar of smooth texture for a taste test, this would detirmine if it would go to dump or not.

To my surprise it was like it just came from the store, texture was perfect, nothing had seperated that I could detect.

None had ever been opened before today.

All the jars had been at 20 F below since 2011, 15 YEARS!!!!

They (jars)are going into the new freezer today after it gets put in later.

What bothered me was that the cans of heirloom seed also stored in there had thawed out.

They are also going back into the new freezer, ASAP.

About 8 years ago I bought one of them wireless refrigerator / freezer alarms that would sound off if the units lost temperature. IIRC the sensors that went into the freezer were two AA batteries, as well as the alarm that I put on top of the freezer. Issue I had is frozen batteries don't last real long. Maybe 4-6 months.

Socom, do you have any idea how long the freezer stopped working before you realized it?

I am guessing bout 3-4 days if not longer.

The remote thermometer did its job, I failed to look at it, did not have alarm on because ADHD at work.

Been tired from working on the jeeps, you get tired fast when you are old, been like a zombie for weeks.

New one is in and running, did not loose to much out of it.

Did not have the alarm on, would not have heard it even if it was on.

Mine has 2 L/I batteries in it, rechargable ones, they last at least a year on a charge.

The receiver has 2 also, they have been in for about 2 years now, L/I also.

The quality of the peanut butter after a cold deep sleep is outstanding!

All the unopened jars are back in the freezer, for that just in case time.

Big thanks for the tip on freezing the peanut butter. I opened a 2 year past Best Buy date stored under the bed on the mountain and it was so rancid I tossed it

I've got some venison I have to do something with some day fairly soon . . . thinking about some sun baked jerkey . . . my forefathers did it . . . didn't kill them . . . so I'm just about ready to send the balloon up.

I just haven't done a lot toward finding the "flavor" I want . . . gonna have to work on that.

Learn how to do it now . . . shtf . . . I'll be one game ahead

      May God bless,
      Dwight

I never thought of freezing Peanut Butter. I never heard any mention of it before now. Thanks.

I started this thread on 29 June, today is 22 July, that jar of peanut butter is now half gone.

It is just as good as if it were new production.

I use it in the morning on a slice of toast with dairy butter included, which goes on first, Ghee does not mix well, taste wise.

I am not using the common super market white bread, product is a whole grain organic bread called "Dave's Killer Bread".

The loaf is heavy at 1 pound and 11 ounces, at least I am getting something of substance for my money, not air.

It has 21 grains in it, this is not a promo for the bread, to me it is a partial solution to my diabetic problem.

Can use only one slice due to the carb content, the PB, dairy butter and the bread slice, keeps me within my carb intake limits.

I throw in a couple of soft boiled eggs for added protein, sometimes a few sausages.

Thats decent bread. I think one slice is about 14 carbs

I order Hero bread online when on keto (currently carnivore again). It is NOT as yummy as Dave's Killer bread. Just plain white bread. Hero Bread is one of the better bread options for people managing diabetes, mainly because its nutrition label shows 0 grams of net carbs per slice. Each slice contains 11 grams of total carbohydrates, but all 11 grams come from dietary fiber, leaving nothing that would typically raise blood sugar. I also order zero carb tortillas from them for the George Foreman grill. Those are pretty good. I'm down to 205, so counting every carb. I'm thinking I want to be 190 as an old guy, so back on carnivore for now.

Hawg: I also like these. Butter the outside, fill with literally a dozen different Keto choices, toss 'em on the George Foreman grill until crisp. 5 net carb pita bread. Hero and Toufayan can be had from Amazon.

Hawg: I loved George as a boxer, but his GF grill is his pinnacle achievement IMO. Think a I paid $39.99 for it years ago, and I use it more than anything else in my kitchen. A guy can eat like a king while getting skinny.
