Finally starting to green up down here

We had sub-freezing temperatures for several days in a row, unheard of here in S Central FL. Killed off a LOT of vegetation, and turned my pastures from slow growing to non growing. Been having to put out hay for the horses since then. Finally got some rain, and the temps are back to normal so the grass is starting to green up. Time to get that 3/4 ton of fertilizer out and spread it.

This time around 4 acres- appx 400 lbs/acre. We rotate what fields get fertilized, they're on a 3 year schedule

He's doing ok for what it is. Don't sell him short AFA horses go- He's one of the guys who built Knoll Farms in Brentwood, was a big riding concern that just recently fell to development. He's worked for a few other stables as well.

Oh and yes, I'm from Long Island, but spent my time commercial fishing and clamming with my father's family, and dairy farming etc with my Mother's family in upstate NY- Not the typical LI childhood. We had horses on the Island as well

Need a good day to drag the spreader out from the back of the small barn, hook it up and grease it, and get this stuff spread

SO- Easter Sunday came around and I finally had the time to fertilize. Had dragged the spreader out of the back corner of the small barn, it hadn't seen daylight since my Dad passed 17 years ago (a friend had been using his stuff, but sadly, he's gone now too). Hooked it up to the tractor to test it out, and all seemed ok until I went to grease it. One U-Joint had no fitting. The places that were open didn't have fittings, the ones I knew would have them were closed, and I'll be damned if I know where the 100+ grease fittings I have are. I thought about it, then greased to one U-Joint, took the fitting out and put it in the other joint and greased that. Loaded all the bags of fertilizer into my pickup and pulled into the barn with the back even with the doors. Got my Son to help: I'd pull up, he'd take 3 bags out and dump them in the spreader, I'd go off and run it til dry, come back, repeat. an hour and a half and it was done. Washed the spreader down and let it dry, put it back and covered it again- good for another year. Oh yeah, went back there and put in a grease fitting where needed the next day
