    T-Man 1066's shop adventures

I figured I will start bombarding yall with shop drivel until you beg me to stop!

This one, I was drilling and tapping a base for a Fanuc robot so it could be bolted to the floor. That plate was 1-1/2" x 30" x 30". Weighed about 400 #s. Just four M22x1.5 taps for the robot, and four 1" holes in the corners for the concrete anchors.

Yes, that is a can of crisco shortening there. Works really well for drill and tap lube. (Apparently gay people think so as well!) Haha!

Surface grinding some custom shearing dies after heat treat. The grinder does not have auto downfeed, but it does have a hydraulic table that will move left to right, and step across to and from the column.

I mentioned that I have been working on random parts for my customer who is restoring the 1912 Mercer Raceabout for his customer in the old site.

This here I did last fall, but it is the steering box for the car. Wore out all to heck, had to bore and re-bush the casting in-line on the boring mill. The support that sets the backlash on the spur gear on the driveshaft (not shown), I had to made a new threaded bushing, as the thread in the housing was stripped out. I ended up going from like a 2-1/2"-16 thread to a 2-19/32"-16. Had to move the setup to the vertical CNC and thread mill it, as it would have been easier than trying to set up an angled face plate on the lathe, and I sure as hell wasn't going to buy a custom tap for 1 piece.

You showed the pic of the Mercer earlier today. This is a zoom of the rear wheel center cap / axle retainer.

I forgot to take pics in the lathe on OP #1, but the blank started out as a 5" diameter slug of 360 brass. I had to bore one side, and thread for 4-9/16"-16 ID threads. Then turn the OD to 4.8". Fairly thin wall. So I made a UHMW trheaded slug to go into the bore to support it during clamping.

Had tho drill face holes and thread in in with a face spanner wrench.

Threw it into the Okuma CNC to mill an octagon hub profile.

My customer has some center cap emblems made somewhere else, I machined a pocket to epoxy them in place. He has a little polishing to do, but basically here is the finished product, minus a little paint on the emblem.

Nice work, you never know what is coming in the door next.
Reminds me of doing the same type of work on vintage Rolls/Royce cars 35 years ago.

My setup is no where near as complex as that . . . and I don't do anything that serious.

But me and my little lathe and vertical mill . . . we have fun together.

Just bought a new table for the mill . . . the old one just simply was either worn out . . . or my feeble attempts to "fix" it were insufficient. Anyway . . . new 50 lb or so table . . . and a set of new fly cutters . . .

Kind of anxious to find something to do on / with em.

Something will turn up . . . just have to wait for now.

But I really do enjoy seeing others do their thing on mills and lathes . . . always found it interesting . . . Thanks Tman

                  May God bless,
                  Dwight
