I know nothing about IT and programing but what I do know is I don't want the government to regulate AI and I am not sure letting the players in the game regulating themselves is a good idea either.

The government would fuck up a wet dream and couldn't run a whorehouse on a Saturday night let alone regulate AI. Besides, I fear the potential to turn AI on the people (For our own good of course) would be too tempting for the government. I know they are already all over it tho, especially the military and intelligence agencies.

Letting the major AI players police themselves would be just as foolish. They would manipulate the regulations to suite their own business agenda.

In the end It all comes down to money and power. He who has money and power has control.

I am following the progress of AI and all it's implications. I use it myself and it's a great tool but I have no idea what will come out of it after all said and done.

Here is how AI could be used in a very very bad way.

Bad operators buy / steal / build a bunch of wheeled electric robots, like the ones Amazon uses to drop off packages. They got cameras on them. They are reprogrammed to use AI and facial recognition to identify people. Instantly scrub the internet. Social media, voting history, gun owner, anti-covid, conservative, etc. Then it could pneumatically shoot a small dart like object with some type of bio-poison. People assume a twinge or bee-sting. 5-7 days later, flop, they are dead. Mean while killer hijacked robot is still dropping off amazon packages, or whatever.

Now that is a crazy thought-up scenario, but I think that is how AI could effectively single out and wipe out alot of people the bad actors don't want around. Remember all the chatter about over-population?

Ok, tin foil hat mode off.

AI is not required to do any of those things. A very talented programmer could easily accomplish those tasks.

      ~MG~
Hey? Would you please elaborate/define what you mean by "network wire"?

Surely not a hardwire, because Agents go on the internet - and there's no "hardwire" to the internet... It was your last sentence that sent my bubble brain into the curiosity, lol.

AI agents run on a machine, the Internet is not required.
If the machine has no physical Internet connection there is no way it can access the Internet, therefore it cannot "escape".
The Internet simply provides easy access to data for training. AI could be used to collect and vet the data from the Internet and then the data used to train the non-Internet connected machine.
More work for the humans but 100% guaranteed that the machine in training cannot "escape". I would think that would be a proper precaution when training a machine to hack.
AI currently is not artificial intelligence, just a glorified search engine. It can be made to look like it's thinking but in reality it is only following very complex "if-then" and similar instructions, if this is the result then do this. It can be "taught" to nest or try other if-then statements if the initial ones provided do not accomplish the task requested.
With powerful processors the machine can process thousands of these statements in a second or two.

As Inor said what you see on the media is the result of a pissing contest between the AI companies.

"AI" has no desire or motivation. Once it completes the requested task it does nothing until instructed. It is not waiting, anticipating, or preparing for a new task, it is doing absolutely nothing.
It does not seek out something to do between tasks.

It is not intelligent, artificial or otherwise.

It's ability to process and find applications for data is enormous and should not be taken lightly.

Right right right - and that would means that any entity an AI agent seemingly hacked into would either have to reside on the same machine/server as the Agent... OR a human hacker got inside (via the internet) and launched his Agent from the inside. Right?

IF that's ^^ right , then every supposed incident is nothing more than staged bullshit.

Wait. PO's Laptop has a small AI agent in it. The laptop is connected to the internet. What am I missing?

Ah. PO's AI is a gather info thingy. But not a fully developed Agent... Like, "Make me a reservation at Bucky's" capable thing. Is that right?

It's hard for me to imagine any machine that's not connected, somewhere within it, to the internet.

No human hacker could get inside via the internet if the machine is not connected to the internet.

My guess is a combination of sloppy programming, intentional "escape", and bullshit

The AI agent on his laptop is a glorified search engine and it will sit there doing nothing until instructed and the results will depend on the explicitly of the instructions given. It will not go running rampant on it's own.
An outside human-directed agent could hack into his laptop and use his laptop to increase it's processing power or access networks it has no physical connection to.
PO's laptop is of very little interest to these people/agents and the odds of that happening are next to zero.

Ah. PO's AI is a gather info thingy. But not a fully developed Agent. Is that right?
Correct. It could be further trained but is currently limited to the data it's creators have given it access to. PO or his laptop doesn't have the access necessary to change this data access or run instructions that are not allowed.

So my reference in programming is based off CNC G-code,Fanuc Macro B, and a few brands of robotics.

In my world, we give the machines a task. Some tasks are conditional. If the probe checks a blank and it falls within pre-programmed specs, then set a bit or a variable to identify it.

As long as the variable is equal to "1", the execute program.

The program can select different paths based on conditions.

CNC's and robots cannot "think" for themselves.

Is AI the same? Is it only able to execute a program, maybe choose a path based on IF/THEN or WHILE/DO/END, etc commands? Or am I too stupid to really grasp this?

                Think of it this way...

Right now, you construct your drawings in FreeCAD or whatever, convert them to G-Code, clean up the G-Code (because FreeCAD always gets something wrong) and then feed them to your machine to make your parts.

In an AI world, you can just describe your part, maybe in drawings or maybe in English or even a combination of the two. It looks at your description and compares it to millions of other descriptions for other similar parts (or even just sections of other non-related parts) and looks at the G-Code that was used to create those parts. It grabs a little G-Code from this thing and little from that thing, combines them together and comes back with a great big huge G-Code file that totally fucks up your new part (and maybe even your machine) better than you ever could even if you were trying.

That is basically what AI does. It doesn't "invent" new stuff the way we think of "inventing". Rather it basically combines things that already exist (and were invented by humans) in new ways that are unique. Sometimes it is pretty good, sometimes not so much.

It works really well in computer programming because programming languages are extremely small (compared to languages like English) and most computer applications are not doing much that is really "new". Even really complex applications, like video games or major accounting systems, are really just the same couple dozen recipes repackaged with different artwork and different sounds to look new and interesting.

Well, now I am again confused AF.

MoreAmmo says it doesn't (or doesn't need to) access the internet - and Inor just described how AI "compares it to millions of other descriptions for other similar parts" all of which would have to live on the internet.

I'm setting this down. I don't need to know and it's making my head hurt. Thanks, y'all, for your replies and participation in the thread.
              I'm good.

Inor , It seems I'm using the wrong word. When I say "internet" I'm talking about everywhere online, outside of my computer, on that digital pipeline that travels outside of TenOaks. Where do the "millions of other descriptions" reside and by what method does your AI access that data if not via online?
Surely all of the millions of descriptions and possibilities could not be coded into, and then included with, the AI when it was created... yes/no?

"Rather it basically combines things that already exist (and were invented by humans) in new ways that are unique."

I am sorry I'm so freaking dense on this point. If the "things that already exist" do not reside on the machine in which the AI lives - how, by what method, does it obtain them to combine?

Actually the millions of other descriptions can reside "inside" the model, living locally on your computer. If you have the right model(s), you can completely unplug you computer from any network anywhere and it will still be able to function normally.

The millions of other descriptions may or may not have been on the internet originally when the model was created. But once it is created, it is just a great big HUGE mathematical formula. That math formula is what it uses to "think". It does not have to access external data anywhere.

AI is a computer program like any other computer program or app. It uses whatever data it is instructed to use, that data can be on the same machine it is running on, in a data center with millions of terabytes of data, or the Internet. Any data source will do as long as it has the data necessary to complete the task it is instructed to do. A human is responsible for pointing it to the correct data source.

Much like shopping, if the store you are shopping at has what you are shopping for you can complete your shopping, if not you will have to go to another store to complete your shopping. The difference is that AI has to be told and given the ability to go to another store, whereas you have the real intelligence and ability to make the decision yourself.

When AI goes shopping for a bra and the store doesn't have a one it may buy an ace bandage to provide the necessary support.

I have heard how AI will try to complete a task in any way possible, whereas it comes up with solutions that are ridiculous sounding, like the ace bandage reference.

I seen a video where one of the Spot robot dogs, without the articulating head, wanted to go through a closed door, but it could not manipulate the handle. It looked like it called another spot dog with the head to open the door for it, to let the first Spot dog through. Solving problems however it can to complete a task.

Stop. All I know is this.

When PO uses his AI to gather information, that AI has to go online to answer his question - because the information does not already reside on PO's computer for the AI to compile and present.

If y'all are telling me that AI doesn't need to go online, well, Bless your hearts , and thank you for the energy you spent on your replies.
