I visited a Sam’s club for the first time today. I’ve been watching youtube videos about Alaskans making runs to Cosco to stock up. Seemed like a good idea, but we don’t have a Cosco. Sam’s is one hour away so I tried it instead. A hugh place with lots of stock, but with very limited selections. I went in to check it out and had a list of about 30 items to buy. I came out with only 18. I was looking to load up on canned fruits. They had zero, only the plastic tubs that kids take in their school lunches. In the Alaska videos they load up on cases of canned stuff. This store wasn’t like that at all, it had a way different vibe, definately geared towards suburbia. I will definitely be buying some things there, but it wasn’t what i was hoping for.

I miss Sam's Club. We had one in Minnesota but the closest one to us now is in Phoenix, 4+ hours away. I liked them better than Costco because their prices were a little better plus they had bigger containers of everything. But as you said, the downside is, they didn't always have everything. They seem to rotate their stock pretty quick - sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't.

When I want to buy flour, I want to buy 4 50 pound bags not 10 20 pound bags! Sam's was good for that.

Say What? What? No way... of flour? I'm missing something, I bread fish and chicken and make gravy but that sounds like a lot of flour.

We used to make a lot of bread, homemade pasta, etc. Plus my wife used to bake a lot. So 200 pounds was maybe a year to a year and a half supply. And when you buy it (and sugar) in bulk, we saved a lot of money.

I used to love Sam's. Great place to stock up and you could find good deals on meat. Nearest one now is 70 miles. No thanks.

I do Costco, and I'm in there like 3 times a week. It's on the very edge of town, and I live 3 minutes out of town. I can literally ride my bike there. Yes, some of it is prepping. But mostly I can eat from their deli section a lot. Pot roast, giant chicken pot pies, street tacos, stir fry, enchiladas, brisket, rotisserie chickens, and steak strips. I can stay on the keto diet and have fresh made good grub. I batch cook a lot in the kitchen... but it's nice to mix it up.

Sams is not as good as it used to be. You usta could make a good prepper stock from there. Now, it is hit and miss. I have never been in a Costco but I would like to if they ever come near me. Inor, I forget exactly where you live but I know I used to shop at a Sams in Prescott Valley, that was pretty decent.

We are WAY down in the SE corner of the state (Cochise County). Tucson is about an hour and a half north-west of us. So there is almost NOTHING here. About twice per year, we go to a great-big-monster-Walmart In Douglas, pretty much right at the customs station. But that is way too much of an adventure to do more than once or twice per year!

Back in '92 I got a trial membership for Sam's club through my employer. I kind of went nuts in there and blew my whole paycheck, about $185 back then.

Haven't been back since.

I go to Sam
s on a pretty regular basis. Sometimes they have what you need, lots of times they don't. Prices are OK, about the same as Wally World.

Costco over this a way. Cheap booze, decent deals on ribs, chicken, fish, nuts, coffee and more.

I'm not sure where the closest Sam's would be, maybe Houston? (180mi) For us, it's a 30+ mile drive to get to a real grocery store or walmart. Luckily, about 5 miles away, there's a small bump in the road where we can get beer & booze, and bread, milk & eggs at a dollar store. We took a run there this morning to get beer and check on flooding. Got plenty of the former and saw none of the latter.

I had a membership years ago, holy cow, the lines at the checkout. No thanks. Besides, regarding bulk purchases, I break stuff down to cents to ounce and such, lots of times bulk items cost more than smaller packages.

Great little place! Where else in the country can you stop and get gas, beer, liquor, and guns all at the same little store? They also have bread, milk, eggs, and ice cream. Only in Texas baby.
