Some of you may recall, and I wish you didn't, that in a previous version of the forum I made a confession about now being against hunting. My thoughts at the time were because we all try so hard to stay free - it's wrong to kill something that IS still actually free. I was wrong about that.

We need to feed ourselves. Period.

Prices, food recalls, commercial processing contaminants, Rx's in livestock feed... And it's only going to get worse, much worse.

Grow as much as you're able, buy from farmer's markets etc, raise chickens or find a local source for eggs... You know the drill. Find a local butcher that processes and sells local beef. The goal is to not have to go into a grocery store for food at all.

And by all means, keep hunting.

But your post is prescient. Just yesterday I was reading about the problems they are having with the African Oryx in New Mexico. These things are CRAZY! They are native to the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Back in the late 60's/early 70's they bred 95 of them and turned them loose on White Sands Missile Range in south-eastern New Mexico. They were bred here specifically for hunting. Fast forward a couple years, they got out of the fences at White Sands (imagine that...). And they are breeding like crazy. They have no natural predators in North America, although once in a great while a mountain lion will take one. But not nearly enough to control the population. Nobody even knows how many there are, but the last estimate was between 5,000-10,000.

So far, they have spread as far north as Alba-Turkey, east past El Paso, TX and west as far as Las Cruses (almost at the AZ border).

They can basically eat anything in the desert and go without water for several days. And fences do not stop them or even slow them down! They are bigger than mule deer and have 3 foot horns on them that they use like spears. Oh yeah, and they are not afraid of anything and are extremely aggressive. They were charging airplanes at White Sands and are now charging cars and trucks. These mother-fuckers have actually killed people!

The really CRAZY part was about 10 years ago, the state of New Mexico was going to exterminate them because they were doing so much damage to the desert and the green-tards raised so much hell they decided not to!

So I am guessing they will be at M.T. Acres in a few years. So along with everything else in the desert that wants to kill me, now I have this to worry about as well! At least the rumor is, they are good eatin'.
